Sen. Ben Sasse Discusses “Born Alive Survivors” Protection

Yesterday, U.S. Senator Ben Sasse (R-Nebr.) appeared on Washington Watch with Tony Perkins, a national radio show which airs on more than 240 stations across the country to discuss the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act. Family Research Council is urging members of the U.S. Senate to vote to close debate on the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, introduced by Sen. Sasse.

Yesterday, on Washington Watch with Tony Perkins, Sen. Sasse made the following comments:

“This bill is not actually about abortion. This is about a baby that has survived an abortion, and is born alive, and is on that table, cold, fighting for life, and crying out. And it’s about the practice that’s known as ‘backing away,’ where the abortion provider simply backs away from the table and leaves the baby to die from exposure and the elements.

“There is nothing here that is controversial or should require any courage. A baby is a baby, and that should have nothing to do with your politics. If you have a heart, you believe that a baby that is born alive has a right and has dignity and has worth.” He continued, “We should be providing the same level of care as we do to any other baby at the same stage of gestation when they’re born.

“On Monday night, you’re actually going to have a chance to see the United States Senate vote—individual senators—put their money where their mouth is and see if they’re actually going to stand with the little guy, because the little guy is that little guy or gal on that table fighting for life,” Sen. Sasse concluded.

Family Research Council President Tony Perkins also remarked:

“This is something that has distinguished America; we might call it American exceptionalism. We understand that each and every human being has dignity and worth.” Perkins continued, “We’ve not always gotten it right in America, but we’ve usually been moving in the right direction. This is stepping backwards, and it will have significant ramifications for us as a country when it comes to the culture, when it comes to the moral standing. This is a defining moment for America.”
