Senior Republican on Ways and Means Wants to Modernize the IRS, Here’s How…

Today, the top Republican on the House Ways and Means Committee Kevin Brady (R-TX) released the following statement after the House passed H.R. 3151, the Taxpayer First Act:

These historic reforms will transform the IRS into an agency truly focused on taxpayer service.  For the first time in twenty years, we are overhauling the agency’s enforcement tools while increasing taxpayers’ protection from identity theft and fraud.  I want to applaud Reps. John Lewis and Mike Kelly for their tireless work to get these bipartisan reforms one step closer to the finish line – it’s time for Congress to finally send this bill to the President’s desk.”

The Taxpayer First Act:

  • Puts taxpayers first. The bill authorizes the restructuring of the entire IRS agency in order to better serve taxpayers.
  • Promotes customer service. The bill requires the IRS to submit to Congress a comprehensive customer service plan to better serve workers and local businesses.
  • Protects taxpayers. We rein in abuses from the IRS by overhauling the agency’s enforcement tools.
  • Revamps the agency’s technology.  These reforms provide the IRS the tools needed to overhaul their IT infrastructure, which will help protect taxpayers from cyberattacks and helps the IRS better serve taxpayers.

The significance of this legislation’s passage is the bipartisan support, something hard to come by in the current polarizing environment in Washington, DC today.
